Delighted to be awarded Life Membership of Pastel Artists of New Zealand, Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and part of the team on the Maniatoto Arts Council, Ranfurly.

Julie explores soft pastel technique, rendering fine details, delicate scumbled layers, texture and atmosphere, often experimenting with other media and texture. She also paints in oil and oil sticks on canvas and panel, oil mono prints plus drawings in charcoal.

Well known for her paintings of horses, stockmen and stockwomen, Julie paints whatever ignites her creative fires across a broad range of subjects.

In the past she illustrated and designed children's books and postage stamps.

In 2017, Julie was recognised as a Master Pastelist of Pastel Artists of New Zealand (MPANZ) in recognition of excellence in technique and the awards she had achieved to date. Julie is one of six Master Pastellists in New Zealand. Her recent pastel paintings are often signed with MPANZ to indicate this honour.

In 2016, Julie was elected a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America (PSA).

With Whanganui glass artist, Greg Hall, Julie has completed painting 25 of 32 stained glass windows for the "The Whanganui Story". This is a historical project for the Whanganui Council Chambers illustrating Whanganui’s history. Visitors are welcome to view the windows by contacting Whanganui District Council.

Julie paints from her studio in the Maniatoto, Central Otago, New Zealand, teaching regular soft pastel classes in Ranfurly.

Her original paintings can be viewed online plus The Artists Room Gallery of Fine Art, Dunedin, Otautau Gallery, Otautau, Southland, and The Heritage Gallery, Cambridge.

2024 MERIT AWARD, MASTER CIRCLE, PASTEL ARTISTS OF NZ

At the annual national exhibition for Pastel Artists of NZ in Morrinsville March 2024, Jule was awards a Merit 

for her pastel painting titled 'The Taieri River at the Creamery Bridge, Māniatoto'.

At the annual national exhibition for Pastel Artists of NZ, Julie was awarded Highly Commended (second place)

for her portrait titled 'Unresolved', of a young woman. 

PATEAROA WAR MEMORIAL STATUE

In time for ANZAC Day 2021, with assistance from Powernet who provided a truck with bucket to reach the height of the statue, Julie repainted the face, hands and riflestock of the statue. This had been a goal for some time, in memory of her father and grandfather, who served in WWII and WWI respectively.

UNISON PASTELS ASSOCIATE

Julie was recently added to the Unison Pastels group of Associate Artists.
She will soon write a blog available through Unison Colour website to support this role.

Through her classes, Julie continues to promote and demonstrate these beautiful soft pastels, a firm favourite of hers.

Artist Statement

The subjects I paint are real and often commonplace, I choose these subjects based on my personal response to them in order to share a moment or a view - to remind us that in our busy lives that there is simple beauty to be found when we take the time to really see. Painting is all about learning to see.

I am most inspired by light falling on any subject, particularly in early morning or the long shadows of late afternoon.

I use archival painting materials in whichever medium I working in, to support longevity of the finished piece.
